The Rooks County Health Department has established a Breastfeeding Support system for new and expecting mothers throughout the county.  The project, spearheaded by Lorraine Baughman, RN, the Department Head, is intended to provide peer counseling, support, and community for mothers.

Jenna Muhrer, the Rooks County Breastfeeding Peer Counselor has been hired and trained to work with mothers throughout the breastfeeding experience.  Jenna and Lorraine have also begun a support group that is meeting on a monthly basis at the health department.  The next meeting will be on Tuesday, June 18 at 6:00pm.  Mothers, expecting mothers, and children 4 and under are all invited to join in the fun.  Free refreshments and door prizes will be available!

Post Rock Family Medicine’s Dr. Beth Loney is also a member of the support group and is excited to be a part of the new group.

In discussing the new support group, Jenna suggests, “This is a wonderful opportunity for mothers to come together and encourage and support one another with their breastfeeding goals.”

The support of the community, Health Department, and Post Rock should help with a growing awareness around breastfeeding.  “Our hope is that this group will help raise awareness of the health benefits of continuing to breastfeed beyond the first few weeks and provide mom’s easy access to women who have had breastfeeding experience” offered Lorraine.
