Plainville Medical Clinic is excited to welcome a new learner to our office.  We asked Rachael Svaty, KU medical student, to tell us a little about herself.

Where are you from?
I grew up on a farm near Ellsworth, Kansas.

Why did you come to Plainville?
I just finished my first year of medical school and the University of Kansas Medical Center.  I chose to spend my summer in Plainville working with Dr. Brull for several reasons.  First, I have a very strong interest in rural family medicine.  I grew up in a small town, so I love rural Kansas and I love the idea of getting to serve patients of all different ages.  I am also interested in obstetrics and women’s health.  I felt like working with Dr. Brull here in Plainville would provide an awesome opportunity to experience all of these things firsthand as well as get a lot of clinical experience from a great teacher!

What do you hope to be when you grow up? Why?
At this point, I have a lot of goals and dreams.  Rural Kansas currently faces a shortage of primary care physicians and that deficit is only expected to increase over the next several years.  Rural Kansas holds a special place in my heart since I grew up here.  I would love to serve as a physician in an underserved area of rural Kansas.  In addition, I am really interested in international medicine.  I had the opportunity while in completing my undergraduate degree at Sterling College to go on mission trips to both Kenya and Egypt.   During the time I spent in these countries, I had the opportunity to serve some of the people in the slums of Nairobi, Kenya, the African bush, and the trash cities of Cairo, Egypt.  The access to healthcare for most of the people I met in these slums was virtually nonexistent.   In the future, I also hope to spend time providing medical care as well as health education to underserved patients internationally.

What do you like about spending your summer in Plainville?
This experience has been so much fun so far!  I just finished my first year of medical school, so I spent a lot of time during the past year studying.  It is great to now be in a clinic and see patients!  Dr. Brull and the rest of the healthcare team here at Plainville are all also fantastic and I really feel accepted as part of the medical team.  In addition, it seems there is never a dull moment here.  I have had so many great learning experiences already and am excited for many more.

What do you like to do outside of medicine?
I like to spend as much time outside as possible.  I especially love biking and gardening.  I also enjoy hiking and helping out on the family farm when I get a chance.  I also love to travel and cook/bake.
